The gold foundry at the Plan-Les-Quates site feels like the workshop of a sorcerers apprentice. Here, are huge ovens, workers with protective aluminium masks and, at the heart of it all, the gold itself, which is melted, alloyed, drawn and drawn again, before being cut, stamped, shaped and assembled into the final product. Yet, 24 carat gold is too malleable to be used as such. It starts of as small beads of pure gold, which are easier to weigh and mix. To make 18 carat Ever-rose gold, precise amounts of pure platinum and copper are added. Each alloy - yellow, white or Ever-rose gold is mixed in a diffrent kind of crucible. Pure gold starts to melt in under 30 minuets as a constant temperature of over 1000 C. This true liquid sunshine is stirred using a carbon rod, then poured into a graphite sieve through a ring a fire to prevent the copper from oxidizing. The process takes less then an hour.

A Sample is taken at each casting and sent for analysis to the Rolex laboratory and to the Swiss Customs Office, which certifies the fineness of the gold. Only then is it shaped and gradually formed into the plate, bar or profile used to make the future watch case or bracelet. Grooved rollers mould the precious metal into fine strips. Not being a very hard metal, gold can easily be shaped cold. There is a scent of oranges in the air. It emanates from natural solvent used in the machine to help the roller adhere to the gold. Thus, a single meter of cast gold gradually becomes four meter long bar. Throughout these shaping operations the gold bar hardens and to be softened again. Under the watchful eye of workers with burgundy smocks and insulated gloves, the gold undergoes a heat treatment - a process that takes over half an hour in a thermal oven in a hydrogen atmosphere to reduce surface oxidation.

Rolex is steeped in gold. Gold constitutes the very body and soul of the watch, giving it its first contours. The bars are pulled one last time through dies that perfectly define their dimensions to within 20 microns. Some 15 differently shaped bars and profiles go into the making of each model. They are now ready to be stamped and tooled, producing various small components of each watch. In all, the gold will pass through a dozen workshops before it is polished and assembled into watch cases and bracelets.

The Rolex GMT-Master II was launched in 1983. It was designed with the same basic functionality as the GMT-Master. It displays multiple time zones simultaneously. However, as opposed to the original, the GMT-Master II offers more versatility in terms of both looks and additional functionality.

The GMT-Master II allows more flexibility in displaying any two time zones simultaneously. In this model, you can set the regular hour hand to a different time zone without adjusting the 24-hour hand and the bezel in any way without affecting the accuracy of the watch. As you unscrew the winding crown to the first notch (position 3), the watch never stops showing the time. Therefore, you can go ahead and slowly turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise. This versatility enables the hour hand to jump one hour at a time without affecting the minute or the second hand. This “one-hour jump” feature gives the GMT-Master II an edge over the GMT-Master.

Different Versions of Rolex GMT-Master II

Model 16760: Introduced in 1983, the first GMT-Master II was powered by caliber 3085 movement that made the special 24-hour hand independently adjustable. In addition, it was the first GMT variant to feature a scratch-resistance sapphire crystal and indices with white gold borders. It was equipped with the hacking feature and had the standard depth rating of 330 feet. The watch utilized extra large crown guards as well. This model was made available in steel with a new combination of red and black on the bezel. Its was given the nickname “Fat Lady” because of its extra-thick case. “Sophia Loren” is another name for this model (but this was not meant as a negative comment on the weight of the famous leading lady).

Model 16710: In 1989, Rolex came out with a new GMT-Master II variant, which was powered by caliber 3185 movement. Its main attraction was that the automatic movement had a 50 hour power reserve. The basic features such as sapphire crystal and depth rating of 330 feet were the same as the previous models. There are a few variants available in this model. For instance, model 16713 is a gold and steel combination while model 16718 is an all gold version. This model also gives you three bezel options such as Coke (red & black combination), Pepsi (red & blue combination), and LN (black). Until the end of 2007, this model has been in continuous production. It has, however, evolved in many aspects such as the introduction of a solid end link bracelet in 2000, laser crown and no-hole case in 2003, and the new caliber 3186 movement.

Model 116713 LN: This was the 50th anniversary edition of the GMT-Master II, which was introduced at the Basel Fair in 2006. It is a combination of steel and gold featuring an all green dial. Later, the black dial version also was made available. It sports a number of cosmetic improvements over the previous model 16710. For instance, it features a new bezel made of an extremely hard ceramic material that prevents discoloration and other handling damages. The numbers on the bezel are filled with a fine layer of gold using a process known as physical vapor deposition. The larger hands were an added attraction as well. In regards to technical aspects, this model improved over previous models by featuring a larger triplock crown as opposed to the twinlock crown of the old GMTs. This new feature offers more protection and greater endurance. The other technical superiority is the new hairspring, patented as the Parachrom Hairspring that makes the watch less sensitive to temperature variations and magnetic fields, thus improving the performance of the watch.

Model 116710LN: Launched in 2007 at the Basel Fair, this model is actually a steel version of the model 116713 LN. It features a ceramic bezel with platinum entrusted numbers, triplock crown, Parachrom hairspring and a green 24-hour hand. The other features of this model are an anti-reflective Cyclops lens, a maxi-dial, 3186 caliber movement, the standard depth rating of 330 feet, a new bracelet with a more solid clasp similar to that of the Daytona, a larger case, and an inner bezel ring engraved with “ROLEX”.

The ceramic bezel in most of the current models is black. However, Rolex is working on introducing twin colors on the ceramic bezel.

Some Exciting GMT-Master II Models Currently Available

With the standard case size of 40mm, the GMT-Master II is available in 18k yellow gold, white gold, steel and Rolesor--a combination of steel and gold. The GMT-Master II, available in 18k yellow gold or white gold, offers numerous styles of dials--from a black and green dial to a diamond-paved dial. The most popular choice in rotating bezels is the one set with diamonds and sapphires. There is even an incredibly opulant bezel style available, fitted with rubies as well as diamonds and sapphires. If precious stones are not your fancy, the option of black ceramic rotating bezel is available as well. To complement this bezel, you still have the availability of diamond-fitted lugs. In bracelets, the Oysterlock bracelet with Easylink is the most popular variety.

However, the steel GMT-Master II is no less impressive. Featuring a black dial with black ceramic rotating bezel and Oysterlock bracelet with Easylink, this model is increasingly popular. The same dial, bezel, and bracelet styles can also be found in the GMT-Master II in Rolesor (steel and 18k yellow gold).

The Rolex Submariner is an example of Rolex's commitment to create a special watch that overcomes any national boundary and continues to perform. To this very day, no wristwatch nearly as effective in terms of water resistance has been produced by any other watch company. This model has also been successfully tested in an expedition to Antarctica where it withstood temperatures of -45 degrees Celsius. Many of the early models of Submariner were in fact used in several James Bond movies like "Dr. No," "Live and Let Die," "License to Kill," "The Man with the Golden Gun," and many more. The popularity of this model made it one of Rolex's flagship models.

Early Models of Rolex Submariner

The first prototype Rolex Submariner, known as the "Deep Sea Special," was successfully tested to a depth of 10,336 feet on September 30, 1953. Some of the earliest Submariner versions included model numbers 6200, 6204, and 6205, and these models were put into different categories based on their depth ratings because not every recreational diver needed a watch with a depth rating of 600+ feet.

The model 6200, believed to be the first Rolex diving watch (released in 1953) was powered by the A.296 movement, unlike models 6204 and 6205 which were both fitted with an improved version--the A.260 movement. In addition, the model 6200 featured a bi-directional bezel and a dial that strongly resembled that of Explorer prototypes. Its case was thick and coupled with an over-sized crown. Nowhere was the word Submariner engraved on the watch; rather, the crown was marked with the word "Brevet" under the coronet. The model had a depth rating of 660 feet.

It was the model 6204 that was officially introduced as the first Submariner at the Basel Spring Watch Fair in 1954. It had a depth rating of 600 feet. It also featured a new dial that had round hour markers with rectangles at the 3, 6, and 9 positions. What was special about this model was that it was the first version to carry the name "Submariner" in very small print on the dial. Another model that made its appearance in 1954 was the 6205, almost similar to the 6204--the only difference being that the 6205 was rated to a depth of only 330 feet under water. All these early Submarines used gilt printing on glossy black dials. In addition, Radium paint was used for the luminous indices.

Major Facelifts During the Mid and Late 1950s

The earliest models 6204 and 6205 were renumbered as 6538 and 6536, respectively, in 1955. Along with these changes, other prominent updates included the following:

All these models were marked with "Submariner" in large print (as opposed to the previous smaller print) above the 6.
The new 1030 movement and Mercedes hands were introduced in the model 6536.
The model 6200 received the Mercedes hands in 1955 and was made available with both the standard Submariner dial and the Explorer-styled dial.

A key change came in the form of a redesigned Submariner bezel in 1956. It now started featuring individual minute marks for the first 15 minutes. This gave the watch a unique look. In addition, the triangle positioned on the bezel was painted red. However, these changes did not continue for long as the bezel was redesigned once more--this time featuring squared font numbers and a triangle that was no longer red. Some other notable changes during this period included the addition of a thicker case and a larger Brevet crown. In addition, in 1958 the model 6200, renumbered as the 5510, was fitted with the new 1530 movement.

A New Wave of Submariners in the 1960s

The new wave of Submariners started with a chronometer version--model 5512. Launched in 1959, it was fitted with the 1570 movement and was the first model to feature the crown guard (or shoulder) with squared ends. These shoulders were added as a protective measure for the winding or setting mechanism. By the early 1960s, the crown guards had a more pointed appearance at the ends. Later, in the mid-1960s, the crown guards started looking rounded. Also, the 1560 movement replaced the earlier 1570 movement and the words "Officially Certified Chronometer" appeared on the dial.

Another major Submariner model making its way to market during this time was the 5513, powered by a non-chronometer 1530 movement. The main attribute complementing the 5512 and 5513 models had been their over-sized crown that later became a standard feature of the Submarine line. The model 5513 was worn by Roger Moore in the movie "Live and Let Die," and to this day is the most popular and memorable Submariner.

Another major change was a shift from Radium paint for the luminous indices to the Tritium-infused paint. In addition, Rolex discontinued the use of gilt or silver gilt dials and in their place introduced white printing on the Submarine watches. The chronometer Submariner models were also engraved with the words "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified."

In 1966, Rolex introduced yet another masterpiece: model 1680. It was the first Submariner to be equipped with a date feature. It was a significant development because it transformed the image of the Submariner from a specialist watch to one that could be worn by anyone. The word "Submariner" was painted in red in this model. Also, the bubble-shaped crystal in earlier versions had given way to the thicker yet flatter crystal in this new model. This change allowed the Cyclops magnifying bubble to be positioned over the date aperture.

Early Rolex Submariners for Military Use

The first Rolex Submariner was issued to the British Royal Navy in 1954. It was a version of the model 6204. Later, a version of the 6538 was specially adapted for the British Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy. The most popular version issued to the British Royal Navy had been the model 5513 in the year 1968. What made this special was its large diamond-shaped hour hand; the tip of the second hand had a similar shape. In addition, the letter "T" was engraved inside a circle on the dial, just above the word "Submariner," signifying the switch from Radium to Tritium as the luminous material used on the dial and hands. A model identical to the 5513 had also been designed for the British Royal Marines in 1972. It was numbered 5517. It was different from 5513 only in one aspect--it featured a bezel that had individual minute markings all the way around. In model 5513, the markings were restricted to the first 15 minutes.

All the models described above look quite different from the ones that are available today. This may be the reason why these are the most sought-after vintage models. People are passionate about collecting them, their popularity is not restricted to their profile of a diver's watch, and they sell for very high prices. The Rolex Explorer was designed to suit the extreme conditions of a variety of different expeditions. It is evident from the fact that the two prototypes of the Explorer, numbered 6098 and 6150, were given to the members of the British Himalayas expedition team on May 29 in 1953, when they set out to conquer Mt. Everest's 29,035 ft. The soon to be released Explorer, model 6098, was given to the expedition member Tenzing Norgay, and it performed without fail. The name “Explorer” was adopted for the model after the widely publicized success of the expedition.

Initial Design

An attribute that makes the Rolex Explorer one of the most recognizable models is its dial. The earliest Explorer, model 6098, featured a white dial with arrow-shaped hour markers and hands while model 6150 looked exceptionally distinct with its black “Quarter Arabic” dial with only the 3-6-9 marked with numerals. In addition, it featured large Mercedes style hands. Later, model 6098 (renumbered as the 6298) was equipped with the famous black Quarter Arabic dial, although retaining the arrow shaped hands. Essential Changes and Advances Over the Years

Many changes have come about since the inception of the Rolex Explorer. The first major change came in the form of model 6610--which looked almost identical to model 6150. However, it could be recognized by its flatter back due to the new 1030 calibre movement. In addition, its dial bore the sign "Chronometer." In all the new models of Rolex Explorer, the most visible change was a shift from the pencil shaped hands to the more popular Mercedes-style hands of today. These watches were produced in limited numbers that were primarily sold in Japan. The second version of the model 1016 was equipped with a "hack" feature in movement. It stops the hand at the 12 position when the winding crown is pulled out to the hand setting position. One of the Recent Achievements of Rolex in Making Daytona

Until 2000, Rolex manufactured the Daytona line carrying imported movements. This new movement has a 72-hour power reserve if the stopwatch function is not used (or 66 hours of power reserve otherwise). The Early Rolex Cosmograph Models

Year of Introduction: Introduced in 1960, model 6239 was the first Rolex Cosmograph. A year later, another model 6241 was also released.

Technical Features: Both the model 6239 and the model 6241 were powered by the 72B movement, which was imported from Valjoux. As opposed to the earlier chronograph models, which had the tachymeter scale engraved on the dial, these Cosmograph models had it on their bezels. In addition, the tachymeter scale calibrated to 300 units per hour, shortly thereafter changed to 200 units per hour.

Cosmetic Features: The basic difference between these two early models was that while the model 6239 sported a solid steel bezel, the model 6241 had a steel ring fitted with clear acrylic insert. As far as the dial is concerned, all early Cosmograph models were available in the following two dials:

Standard Dials: The standard dials were either black with silver registers or silver with black registers.
Exotic Dials: The exotic dials were available in either black with white registers or cream white with black registers. This created an interesting contrast not found in other Rolex models.

Subsequent Models of Rolex Cosmograph "Daytona"

Over the years, Rolex came out with the following new Daytona models, each showing some technological improvements over the previous models in some way or another:

Model 6262 & 6264: In 1965, model 6262 replaced the model 6239, while the model 6464 replaced the model 6241. These models were an improvement over the earlier versions as they utilized a new Valjoux 727 movement.

Model 6240: It was a completely new model, also launched in 1965. Its unique feature was its screw down waterproof pushers making it waterproof to a level of 165 feet. It was also the first Rolex Daytona that had "Oyster" engraved on its dial.

Model 6263 & 6265: Introduced in 1971, model 6263 was an improved version of Model 6262, while model 6265 improved upon model 6264. These improved versions featured the new screw-down waterproof pushers. They were also the first Daytona models to use a new larger Triplock winding crown.

Model 16520/16523/16528: These models include the new Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, launched in 1988. While the tachymeter scale present in these models calibrated to the usual 200 units per hour, it was soon thereafter upgraded to 400 units per hour (as can be found in all current Daytona models). The only difference between these models was that while model 16520 was available in stainless steel, model 16523 was available in a combination of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold (two-tone) and model 16528 was available in 18k yellow gold only. These models were powered by caliber 4030 Zenith El Primero movement, which gave them an edge over previous models in terms of performance.

Model 16518: Rolex launched a new Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona model in 1992, which was made available only in 18k yellow gold. It also featured a leather strap and safety deployment clasp. It was different from the earlier models due to its bezel, which sported small triangles in place of small dots pointing to the individual calibrated numbers.

Model 16519: Introduced in 1997, it was similar to model 16518, the only difference being that it was made of white gold.

Rolex Cosmograph Also Known as the Paul Newman and Daytona

In the car racing film Winning, the star Paul Newman was seen wearing a Rolex Cosmograph with an exotic dial. Later, he made appearances in movie posters and some popular Italian magazines, reportedly flaunting his Rolex Cosmograph collection. Rolex is a renowned brand for its innovative, exclusive, and precise watches. Rolex keeps coming up with special timekeeping devices every few years. Rolex finally unveiled Date-Just II at Baselworld 2009 as all Rolex watches lovers expected. Though Baselworld 2009 just recently closed, there already appears hundreds of articles about Rolex 2009 new releases. Rolex Date-Just II, in particular, draws great attention with some noticeable changes.

Rolex came with four 41mm Date-Just II models and eight 36mm Date-Just II models at Baselworld 2009. Rolex men's watch first had 41mm model on Day-Date II in 2008, this year was Date-Just II's turn. One Two-Tone 41mm Datejust II model uses green theme Roman numbers and a baton marker with luminescence at 9 o'clock. The green elements first appeared at Basel 2004. GMT Master II, Anniversary Submariner, and Milgauss 116400GV are all beneficiaries of green elements. Personally, I love green which is fresh and vivid. But I never thought it could display its charm on watches till Rolex made it true. Two of other Rolex Date-Just II models apply Arabic markers. One in two-tone and the other in white gold and stainless steel. Noticeable is that the arabic numerals on white gold version presents something purple. The last 41mm Date-Just II keeps more tradition looking with baton markers. I am a little disappointed about the combination of fluted bezels and Oyster bracelet on these four models. In eyes of mine, fluted bezels goes better with Jubillee bracelet.

Female Rolex watches lovers may cheer as they are spoiled with eight 36mm Date-Just II this year. Obviously, Now Date-Just now tries to attract more female customers. In another word, Rolex Date-Just now is being transformed from a men's watch line to a unisex watch line. As a woman, these Date-Just II of feminine slant do take my breath away. And my favorite model is the one features grey dial and flower patterns.

There is simply no end to the number of variations on a theme. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, introduced in 1953, is a veritable icon: eternal and complex. From the first model in this sporty collection (ref. 6204), with its bidirectional, delicately knurled bezel, its slim case and 5.3 mm shoulder-less screw-down crown, to the latest version, which dons a dazzling new unidirectional rotatable bezel with a Cerachrom disc, the possibilities are infinite. Indeed, there are many editions of this divers' watch. Hot on the heels of the first model - the spirit of the entire Submariner saga - came a sequel, a second, very similar series in 1954. Another was added that same year, starring the remarkable Submariner with calibre 1030, the first Rolex bidirectional rotor movement. Collection called it the James Bond Rolex (ref. 6538), for it was the watch immortalized by Sean Connery in the role as Agent 007.

As venerated as it was, the famous 6538 dared, in 1959, to make way for a more modern version, the Submariner 5512, the first model with shoulders to protect the winding crown. It was followed by the Submariner 5513, launched in 1962. The new arrival would constitute a definitive design destined to never go unnoticed. With the exception of subtle variations that today figure high on the collector's wish list, the timepiece remained unchanged until 1969, with the appearance of the ref. 1680 or "Sub Date". Rooted in parallel worlds, the two watches enjoyed iconic stature. Thew year 1979 heralded another changed: sapphire crystle were introduced for cases that were waterproof to a depth of 300 meters (1000 feet). The 40mm "Sub" 16800, with calibre 3035, had arrived. Availble in steel, 18 carat gold and Rolesor, the Submariner would become a legendary sports watch, henceforth reigning supreme in the diving world. In 2003, a new series featured a green bezel to commemorate its 50th anniversary. A symbolic halo for one of the most coveted sports watches - the quintessence of style. In 2008, the Submariner Date perpetual the legend. Sculpted out of a block of 18 carat yellow or white gold, it has a unidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue or black Cerachrom disc.

Q: Years ago, I bought a Rolex Oyster chronometer wristwatch in the PX. I didn't like it because I had to change the battery. A friend told me that Rolex didn't make many, so it is worth more because it is rare. Your comment?

A: When we first read the query, we thought, "Whoa! Rolex doesn't make battery watches." As the joke goes, when someone on a street corner offers you a battery Rolex, run.

Chicago jeweler Jeff Cohen specializes in fine pocket and wristwatches. He also buys, sells and appraises vintage and antique jewelry, and he set us straight.

"Ninety-nine percent of Rolex's don't take quartz batteries," he told us. But in the 1980s, at the height of the Japanese quartz battery boom, makers of luxury automatic watches saw the writing on the wall. A few, including Rolex, produced several battery-powered models.

By the 1990s, mechanical watches were popular again. Today, very high-end, complex, artisan-made automatics and signature vintage/antique watches rule. Battery timepieces are definitely down-market.

By the traditional laws of collecting, the fact that fewer battery watches were produced should mean that they are rare and therefore pricier.

But smart collectors know that collecting has many quirks. The rule that rarity equals value flies out the window when there is no demand. In this case, Rolex buyers don't want to even think about a non-mechanical watch, no matter how unusual it is.

According to Cohen, Rolex made about three battery models, all for men. Value on those today is as a pre-owned, not collector, watch. No cachet.

Matter of fact, he added, they are "just a little less desirable" than vintage automatics. An all gold vintage battery version of Rolex's best, the Presidential model, now sells for $6,000 to $8,000.

Introduced in 1954, the Rolex Milgauss is one of the most desirable models for all watch collectors. It is a unique model as it has been specially designed for people working in power plants and research labs. Resistant to a magnetic flux density of 1,000 gauss, this watch is meant for highly magnetic environments.

What Made Rolex Come Out With Milgauss?

Like its other special watches (Tool Models) such as Explorer, Explorer II, GMT-Master, Submariner, and Sea-Dweller that cater to people in specialized fields, the Rolex Milgauss was rolled out with an objective to serve a specific niche--those people who had to work amidst strong electromagnetic fields. As electromagnetic fields hamper the accuracy of normal watches, Rolex designed a special watch equipped with an appropriate defense mechanism to resist electromagnetic fields.

Features of the Rolex Milgauss

Rolex equipped this special model with a movement that contained anti-magnetic alloys and was also encased with an iron shield known as the Faraday cage or Faraday shield (named after physicist Michael Faraday). This shield provided a protective wall against external static electrical fields. Thus, it was the first perfect anti-magnetic watch with a magnetic intensity rating of 1000 oersted. This made Rolex name the model "Milgauss" derived from the French word mille, which means one thousand and gauss that means the unit of magnetic flux density.

Only two Milgauss models were created by Rolex as described below:

Model 6541: This was the first Milgauss model introduced in 1954. Its over-sized case, bezel, and dial were similar to that of the Rolex Submariner. It also featured leaf-shaped hands, a twin-lock crown, a riveted construction Oyster bracelet, and a caliber 1065M movement.

Model 1019: This model was different from the previous model in that it exhibited a plain, smooth-finished bezel in place of the Submariner's bezel lookalike. Also, the name "Milgauss" was engraved on the dial under the 12 o'clock position, unlike in the previous model where it appeared just above the 6 o'clock position.

Over the years, many changes took place in the hands. The early leaf-shaped hands were replaced by the Mercedes-style hands with lightning bolt seconds. In subsequent years, they were again replaced by yet another new style: stick-shaped hands.

Nearly twenty years after this model had been discontinued, in 2007 Rolex decided to start its production all over again.

Self-winding and waterproof to a depth of 330 feet, this unique Rolex watch is available in steel; black and white dials are the two popular dial options in this model. Last year, Rolex introduced the 50th anniversary edition of the GMT Master II. The improvements over the older style GMT Master II seemed substantial, but there was one major problem: it was only available in two-tone (18k gold and stainless steel). For two-tone lovers, it was a dream come true, but being a pure stainless steel man myself, I decided to hold off even writing about the update until there were other options.

At Basel World 2007, Rolex finally made the announcement I've been waiting for: an all stainless steel version of the new GMT Master II. I haven't seen one in person yet, but judging from all the pictures I've seen, it's one of the most beautiful Rolex's ever produced.

I have a particular affinity for the GMT Master II because I think it's one of Rolex's most practical watches. To summarize, it basically does four things, and it does them perfectly:

Tells the time in your time zone.
Tells the date in your time zone.
Tells the time in a second time zone.
Allows you switch between time zones and move the date forward or backward extremely easily.

If you're looking for an elegant but durable travel watch, you won't do any better than the Rolex GMT Master II.

So how did Rolex manage to improve such a well designed watch? As I said, I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet, but from what I can gather, these are the major changes:

The movement. The movement has been updated to the new calibre 3186. The 3186 doesn't have any new features, but apparently the movement of the hour hand is much smoother and more precise when setting the hour hand than it was with the 3185. Additionally, the main spring has been replaced with one which is more temperature resistant, which makes the watch more precise.
New dial design. The new GMT Master II is outfitted with what has become known as the "maxi-dial" which means that the hour markers are larger, and both the the minute hand and the hour hands are slightly wider.
The bezel. The bezel on the new GMT Master is ceramic rather than painted aluminum. This type of ceramic is extremely durable and resistant to abrasions and discoloration.
Trip-lock crown. The new GMT Master II uses the Trip-lock crown system of the Submariner, Sea-Dweller, and Yacht-Masters. The crown is larger, heavier, easier to grasp, and in theory should make the watch more water resistant, though I don't believe Rolex has changed the depth rating.
Green 24-hour hand. The 24-hour hand on the older GMT Master II is red. Rolex seems to have taken an interest in green lately as evidenced by the new green 24-hour hand, green bezel of the Anniversary Submariner, and the green crystal of the new Milgauss.
Inner bezel engraving. The inner bezel of the new GMT Master II is engraved with the word ROLEX all the way around.
Polished inner-links. The links in the center of the Oyster bracelet are polished rather than brushed.
Slightly taller case. The case on the new GMT Master II is slightly taller to accommodate the new movement.

Certified by COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), the Day-Date generally features a 36 mm case - the Special Edition version is available in 39 mm and the new Oyster Perpetual Day-Date II in 41 mm - and is usually fitted with the President bracelet created especially for the model at its launch. Tjhe Oyster Perpetual Day-Date is offered in an infinite variety of bezels, dials and bracelets, set with the prettiest of gemstones. It has left its mark on the collective unconscious as the ultimate in urban luxury watchwear.

Step 1

Hold the watch over a desk or other surface so that if the watch slips from your fingers, it won't drop far enough to damage it.
Step 2

Unscrew the crown. This is the small nub that sticks out of the 3 o'clock position on the watch. Turn the crown half a turn counterclockwise. The crown will pop out slightly.
Step 3

Turn the crown 30 or 40 complete turns in a clockwise direction. Don't worry about over-winding. Rolex watches have a built-in mechanism that prevents over-winding.
Step 4

Push the crown back into the watch. You'll feel and hear it engage. If your watch doesn't start working immediately, don't shake it. Wear your watch on your wrist for awhile so the natural motions of your wrist will start it working again, or set it aside for awhile and it should start running on its own.

In early 2010, the company will name the first five recipients of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise: Young Laureates Programme, honouring men and women between the ages of 18 and 30 with inventive ideas to solve tomorrow’s challenges in science and health, applied technology, exploration, the environment and cultural preservation. Award recipients will each receive a US$50,000 cash prize to enable them to pursue an original project. Equally important, they will join the network of Rolex specialists and innovators who can offer invaluable expertise and guidance.

The Young Laureates Programme is an expansion of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, which were established in 1976. The inaugural Rolex Awards commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Oyster chronometer, the world’s first waterproof watch, and were created to encourage individuals ready to take on major challenges to benefit humankind and the environment. Since 1976, 110 Rolex Awards for Enterprise have been presented to Laureates and Associate Laureates from 40 countries, implementing projects in more than 60 countries. Recent winners include a social activist who has developed an affordable strategy to build housing for the rural poor using recycled materials in her native Paraguay; a Scottish physicist who created a breakthrough method to predict volcanic eruptions via an unmanned helicopter; and a Jordanian chemist working to save the ancient archaeological site of Petra.

Young Rolex Awards Selection Process

To find young people around the world determined to carry out projects with a significant impact, a range of institutions, organizations and individuals will be invited to nominate potential candidates. Those who accept the nomination will complete an application form that explains the scope, goals and feasibility of their projects. An independent jury will select five individuals with strong potential to advance human knowledge and well-being.

Each winner will receive the $50,000 prize over the course of two years. Funding of $25,000 each in the first year will give the Young Laureates the time to bring greater focus to their projects; the second instalment of $25,000 will propel the projects forward. Rolex may also provide additional support to the Young Laureates to pursue a related activity that will add further value to their work.

The Young Laureates Programme complements the original Rolex Awards for Enterprise, it does not replace it. In 2010, five Young Laureates will be selected; in 2012, five Laureates and five Associate Laureates will again be chosen. The two variations of the programme will thus alternate every two years.

Commemorating the Battle of Britain

Apparently before WWII Rolex was the favourite brand of long-distance flyers and had become the watch of choice for Battle of Britain fighter pilots. Neutral Switzerland stayed out of the war, but Rolex's founder, Hans Wilsdorf, (who, ironically, was German-born) was so moved by this distinction, he decided to honour these brave men with a new line of manual wind Oysters.

While the Oyster Royal line existed already before the war - and was, at that time, the most expensive manual wind model - Rolex began producing larger watches and baptizing them with names like "Air Tiger," "Air Lion," "Air Giant," and "Air King."

Interestingly enough, what was then considered a "large" dial - 32 to 33 mm diameter - is now small in comparison, as most Rolex sports models feature a 40 mm dial.

The "Air" line of watches remained in production until the early 1960s, but never really took off (forgive the pun). In the end only the Air-King survived and was eventually fitted with an automatic movement.

Whom the Air-King is designed for

You might be interested in purchasing this model if you have your heart set on a Rolex but can't fork over a lot of money. You have to like understated elegance though, because this stainless steel model has a very clean and simple design. If your tastes run toward a more swank look - and if your budget allows indulgence - you might prefer dressier pieces in the Oyster Perpetual line, DateJust, for example.

Keep in mind, too, that Air-King is not for diving or water sports enthusiasts because its impermeability is only 330 feet (about 100 metres). A better model would be the sturdier Sea-Dweller or the Submariner.

Released in 1956 after Rolex had been enjoying quite a barren spell in the sale of its manufactured complicated timepieces it soon began to revive fortune. This new 6511 the "Day Date" had a window at 12 spelling out the day at 12 and the date was shown at 3. Due to the complexity of the watch, with its automatic movement, additional day and date discs and a screw down back it was a very large and thick watch which gave it presence on the wrist. Introduced as a niche model it soon gained the popularity it deserves and after the introduction of the concealed clasp it was known as the "President"

The Day Date became Rolex's flagship and savior. The first model (6511) lasted just over a year before it was replaced by the externally identical 6611. This model featured the new calibre 1055 movement with its free sprung Micro-Stella balance and was the first to be labeled " Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial. This new accuracy standard guaranteed the watch to remain within + 3.0 seconds per day.

The Day Date earned the nickname the "President" when Rolex reportedly gave one to the then President of the United States Dwight Eisenhower. It is believed that President Eisenhower was given this watch in conjunction with the launch of the concealed clasp.

These early models did not have the hack feature and appeared rather bulky. In their never ending quest to modernize the basic configuration of the Day Date, Rolex designers have changed from the bulbus bubbleback look of the early models to the slender shape employed today.

With only a few mild case design changes over the years the first modification to the Day Date was the addition of the hack feature in 1972. This allowed the second hand to be stopped dead if you wanted to set the time via a preset accurate source. At this time the shape of the head was essentially the same as it is today. The Day Date was available in white gold, yellow gold, pink gold and platinum although during the early 1930's the pink gold watch was fazed out.

The " Quick set " feature solved one of the watches biggest problems. Introduced in the late 1970's Quick set was added to all Rolex models by 1983. Instead of turning the crown round and round to change the date the wearer could just pull the button out half way and a few turns at most and the correct date was displayed.

The introduction of the quick set feature also coincided with other developments for the Day Date. The inclusion of the sapphire crystal not only gave the watch a sleeker look but also added to the durability of the watch. The sapphire crystal fitted tighter than the plastic glass employed before and rendered the watch glass scratch proof near enough. The early Day Date models were waterproof to 165 feet ( 50 meters) while the current model is safe at depths of up to 100 meters. At the same time the current model is much slimmer.

In addition to the advancements structurally and internally Rolex introduced a new number system that is still in use for today on some models. They added an extra digit to the model number. This number although denoted a new line actually represented the material the watch was when it left the product line.

Introduced at the end of 1990 was the "Double Quick Set" watch. This was model 18238 and it made the setting of the Day and Date even easier as they could both be done on the button. Rolex has also increasingly expanded their "Crown Collection" to include all types of precious stones by now although they were available with diamonds on the bezel from their introduction.

From the end of 2000 the Day Date has been available in pink gold again. The watch has also been introduced with a doomed sapphire mineral glass and can come on an oyster bracelet to bring it in line with many of their other models.

The Day Date across the world has become synonymous with class and style. This watch remains one of the most prestigious additions a man can have to his wardrobe.

The cases are similar to Rolex models and often are sold with Rolex’s famous Oyster case. During the period when both Rolex and Tudor used acrylic crystals, the Tudor and Rolex models would often share a similar depth rating.

Many Tudor models up to the 1990’s were sold with Rolex signed bracelets and crowns also.

The Tudor line can be traced all the way back to the beginning of the 20th Century. The earliest Tudor I have owned dated to the 1930’s and used a caliber 59 movement, also used in the Canadian market Rolex’s.

Over the years various models have been produced in an attempt to increase the brand’s market presence. The most popular model Tudor has produced is most likely the Submariner. Early models used a modified Fleurier 350 caliber, branded the Tudor 390 caliber. These are often mistaken as Rolex movements as they shared a similar rotor winding device.

During the mid to late 1960’s Rolex switched to another manufacturer, ETA to supply the base movements for their watches. These Early Submariners have become quite collectible. The increase in value has led to a large quantity of fakes penetrating the market. These are being produced in the Far East and are easily spotted upon close examination along with some investigation into what the real model should look like.

Other popular models are the older Chronographs as well as the Ranger and Ranger 2 models, which rode the wave of market demand created by the Rolex Explorer 1, reference 1016. Both watches share a similar dial configuration.

So are these watches considered “real Rolex’s?” I would say NO! However Tudor watches have earned a place at the forefront of watch collection as they are a unique product that reflects on the history of the Rolex Watch Company. Actually in some cases particular models actually sell for more than some popular vintage Rolex models.

To those who complain about the Rolex modified movements and suggest it makes them less desirable, perhaps you need only examine the phenomena of the Rolex Daytona, which used a modified Ebauche movement up until 2002, I would suggest no one considers those watches les than acceptable Rolex’s.

The Rolex GMT Master II is a great looking and very functional high-end Swiss timepiece. It's a beautiful watch which is sophisticated in both appearance and operation, yet it somehow manages to present itself as understated and modest. The Rolex GMT Master II has a long and interesting history, and is certainly one of the most popular Rolex Professional models.

The big feature of the Rolex GMT Master II is the additional 24-hour hand which tracks hours against the bi-directional rotating bezel in "military time" as opposed to standard 12-hour time. It was originally created for Pan Am pilots back in the early days of transatlantic flights. Pan Am pilots used GMT time, so they wanted a watch that would allow them to monitor both GMT and local time simultaneously. The watch's movement became more sophisticated over the years, and now allows the standard hour hand and the date to be set independently of the other hands which makes moving from one time zone to the next very smooth and simple.

Remove a link to make the Rolex band smaller. Examine the edge of the watch band. You will see two tiny holes on both ends of the band. Unscrew the pins by placing your screwdriver in the holes with a groove. Remove both pins.

Like many others I was worried about spending this amount of money over the Internet, especially with a company I had known nothing about or had ever heard of before. Rolex Introduced the Submariner in the early 1950's. It's likely that the original Submariner was built based on the Rolex Explorer. However, the Submariner case was thicker than the Explorer, with a rounded crystal and oversized crown. The early Submariner had stick hands with luminous tipped second sweep hands. When introduced, the Submariner was rated to 330 feet (100m). The original Submariner also had a bi-directional bezel without the minute hash marks (as is commonly seen today). Originally, the Submariner was fitted with the A296 movement but within a few years, Rolex upgraded the movement to the 1030, added the Mercedes hands and renumbered the model to a 6536/6538. Also, included were the round luminous hour markers and rectangular luminous markers at 3, 6 and 9 positions. The late 50s also saw the introduction of the "shoulder" feature (where the sides of the case come up on either side of the crown and create a protective shield around the crown). The original 6200 was renumbered as well and the movement upgraded to the 1530 non- chronometer version. By the early 60's the movements for all of the Submariner models were upgraded to the Chronometer version. In the mid-60's Rolex again upgraded the model and movement and added the date feature with the cyclops bubble. During this time-period, Rolex also provided the Submariner to the Royal Navy. Unlike the consumer models, the Royal Navy watches had welded steel bars instead of the spring bars. Also, these watch hands were wider and bolder with a simplified crown. These watches also had engravings on the back for easy identification. As customary with Rolex, Rolex kept fine-tuning the Submariner by adding the triple-lock crown in the 70's and the scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire crystal in the 80s. Introduction of the sapphire crystal also helped Rolex streamline the profile of the Submariner. The 80s also included a renumbering of the model numbers from the 1680 to the 16800. This was done primarily to help in easy identification of Rolex model variations (stainless steel, two-tone, 18K gold, etc.). In addition, the operating depth of the watch was also increased to 1,000 feet. In the mid-90s, Rolex once again updated the model to the 16610 with the 3135 caliber movement. Later in the 80's a new movement was included without a change in the model number. The final major change was the introduction of the ladies Submariner in the mid-90s. In 2003, marking the 50th anniversary of the Submariner, Rolex introduced the maxi dial, green bezel Submariner.

History Of The Rolex Datejust

Rolex Datejust Introduced in 1945, the Rolex Datejust marked the 40-year anniversary of Rolex. The original models were thinly disguised versions of the Rolex Bubbleback. The key difference between the Bubbleback and the Datejust, obviously, was the introduction of the date function at the 3 position. To accommodate the date wheel, the Rolex Datejust was slightly thicker than the Bubbleback. The date wheel contained alternating red and black date markers (to distinguish odd days from even days). Also, when introduced, the Rolex Datejust was fitted with a coin-edged bezel and a pie-pan dial. At it's release, the Datejust was the premium Rolex brand. In the mid-50s, the cyclops feature was first released on the Datejust. Also, as Rolex released the Day-Date or President, Rolex started to allow the Datejust to be sold with different types of bracelets. Also, in the mid-50s, Rolex introduced the Thunderbird model of the Datejust. The only real difference between the 50's Datejust and the Thunderbird was in the bezel. The Thunderbird model contained the Rolex Turn-O-Graph bezel. In the 70's, four key features were released that significantly changed the shape of the Datejust from it's original design. A new movement was built to house the quickset feature. Since the new movement had a smaller profile, a new case and dial were also used (discarding the old pie-pan dial). Finally, the introduction of the sapphire crystal created the now familiar version of the Datejust, relegating the domed plastic crystal to the history books.

BIG ROLEX HEIST

A Lincoln Road jewelry store was the scene of a dramatic robbery on Tuesday when several hooded men walked in, ordered everyone to the ground and shattered several glass cases before making off with approximately $180,000 worth of watches, the police said.

The robbery at Mayors Jewelers, 1000 Lincoln Rd., took place at approximately 8:30 p.m., while several salespeople and customers were inside. According to the police report, a group of hooded men ran into the store yelling ''Get down, nobody move,'' then used sledgehammers to smash the cases holding Rolex and other watches. They ran out of the store and fled in two waiting cars, the police said.

''Robberies like this are very uncommon in Miami Beach, and it was committed by someone who knew what they were doing,'' said police spokesman Robert Hernandez. ``Criminals like these, they come a few days before, case the store, decide what they want, then come in methodically to take what they want. This was not your rookie robber.''

The Lincoln Road Mayors was also the victim of the city's last smash-and-grab robbery in 2000, Hernandez said. The modus operandi was virtually identical in that case, and the criminals made off with approximately $150,000 in watches, according to the police report.

After the 2000 robbery, the jewelry store hired off-duty police officers to provide security, but the management later discontinued the service, police sources said.Store representatives could not be reached for comment.

The police are looking into a possible link with a similar robbery in Coral Gables, Hernandez said.''When you have more than one of these crimes, it's often the same people,'' Hernandez said. ``They use the same procedure and just go from county to county.''

Long tactical race - The Rolex Fastnet Race loses none of it's magic

While the previous Rolex Fastnet Race is remembered for the course record time being demolished, the only record broken in this year's running of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's biennial 608 nautical-mile classic was one relating to competitor patience, as light winds at the start and end, combined with powerful spring tides, made for a 'tactically challenging' race, and one of the longest in recent years.

Running from Cowes to Plymouth via the Fastnet Rock off southwest Ireland, the race again proved it remains one of the world's most prestigious offshore yacht races. The 300-boat entry limit was reached quickly, attracting boats from a wide spread of nations. The bulk came from the UK and France, but there were potent entries from the USA, Hong Kong, Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and others coming from afar afield as Chile and Australia.

This year's event also attracted a hugely competitive line-up of professional sailors and grand prix race boats from around the world. Wash your Rolex from time to time in moderately warm water, using a mild soap and a soft brush. If you used the watch in salt water (the ocean) you should rinse the watch in fresh water to remove slat and sand off of it.

Avoid excessive wear between links.

You will need to have the bracelet properly sized so it will fit around your wrist.

That way you will avoid dirt and dust collected between the bracelet links.

Dirt will actually act as sandpaper grinding the metal away.

Then in 1908, a German named Hans Wildorf founded Rolex with his brother-in-law and from that point forward, personal timekeeping would never be the same.

Not only did Herr Wildorf make Rolex watches small enough to fit comfortably on a wrist, he also invented the world’s first truly waterproof watch and a few years later, the world’s first self-winding watch, the Rolex Perpetual. That persistence paid off a few years later when one particular pre-owned Rolex model became prized by collectors in Europe and throughout America. Rolex produced only one model of the quartz watch in a limited production run and today, it’s one of the most sought-after pre-owned Rolex watches by collectors.

The demand for the Rolex quartz is dwarfed by collectors’ enthusiasm and desire for another model. The first Paul Newman Cosmograph Daytona was introduced in the late 60s and featured a built-in stopwatch that was a practical tool for racing car time trials, as well as a variety of other uses, from horse racing to track and field events. Because of the boom in digital watches at the time, Rolex produced a relatively small number of Paul Newman Daytonas, but in the 80s, it became a must-have for serious collectors of used Rolex watches and as prices soared, they became harder to find.

These are only a couple examples of used Rolex watches indicative of the value that pre-owned Rolex watches retain over time. While the resale value is exceptionally enduring, most people more often purchase used Rolex's for uniquely personal reasons. Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races

MONTEREY, Calif. - (Business Wire) Every year at the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, attendees look forward to indulging in Rolex’s award-winning “Moments in Time” display, which honors six different historic racing cars and their most significant achievements.

This year, at the vintage motorsports event's 36th edition, which runs from Friday, August 14 through Sunday, August 16 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the museum-quality exhibit will be more dramatic than ever, theatrically staging amazing cars from the 1960s and 1970s within the context of the history they made.

Perhaps most extraordinary will be the inclusion of the Gulf Ford GT 40 and the 908LH Porsche that famously exchanged leads in the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans until the GT-40 prevailed, with only four seconds to spare, marking the closest margin of victory ever at Le Mans.

The Gulf 917K that will be displayed is the car driven in the 1970 1000 km race at Spa, Belgium, where it led until it retired. Its teammate won at the amazing average of 149 mph.

The Ferrari 512S that also will be in the display is the car driven at the opening round at Daytona and at Monza and Targa Florio where it finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

“The cars were as purposeful as their designers and drivers were determined and courageous,” said Steve Earle of General Racing, Ltd., which owns and organizes the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races. “The Rolex Moments in Time exhibit brings to life past eras of racing in a way that lets you feel the presence of these cars and their achievements.”

Rounding out the display will be the 1972 McLaren M20, Team McLaren’s last challenger in the Can-Am Series that the team dominated for seven years, and the 1976 Porsche 936/81, winner at Le Mans in 1977, second place in 1978 and 12th in 1981. This car was the first of the three Porsche 936 cars built and the only one to compete in five Le Mans races. It was driven at different times by Jurgen Barth, Reinhold Joest, Hurley Haywood and Vern Schuppan, all of whom will be at the Rolex Monterey Historics.
